چکیده
Borelli et.al. [Phys. Lett. A 267 (2000) 201] study a 2-dimensional fluid membrane in a 2+1-dimensional space, subject to quantum fluctuations. Unfortunately, they use an unphysical kinetic-energy term which is not invariant under coordinate transformations. Moreover, they expand the resulting field theory around D = 2, which is not its lower critical dimension. We study the corrected field theory to one loop order in a D = ǫ expansion and find a quantum transition even at T = 0. Borelli et.al. [1] investigate the quantum fluctuations of a membrane with curvature stiffness and surface tension. They start from the action S0 = ∫ dtdσ √ g ( 1 2ν (∂tX) 2 + r + 2 α H )

Decrumpling membranes by quantum effects
– The phase diagram of an incompressible fluid membrane subject to quantum and thermal fluctuations is calculated exactly in a large number of dimensions of configuration space. At zero temperature, a crumpling transition is found at a critical bending rigidity 1/αc. For membranes of fixed lateral size, a crumpling transition occurs at nonzero temperatures in an auxiliary mean field approximati...

A stack of tensionless membranes with nonlinear curvature energy and vertical harmonic interaction is studied. At low temperatures, the system forms a lamellar phase. At a critical temperature, the stack disorders vertically in a melting-like transition. PACS. 82.65.Dp Thermodynamics of surfaces and interfaces – 68.35.Rh Phase transitions and critical phenomena
متن کاملThe crumpling transition of membranes driven by quantum fluctuations in a D = ǫ expansion
We consider aD-dimensional fluid membrane in aD+1-dimensional embedding space, subject to quantum fluctuations. The corresponding action is invariant under coordinate transformations and depends only on the shape of the membrane and its variation, neglecting tangential degrees of freedom. We calculate the resulting field theory to one loop order in a D = ǫ expansion and find a quantum transitio...

A nonrelativistic Bose gas is represented as a grand-canonical ensemble of fluctuating closed spacetime strings of arbitrary shape and length. The loops are characterized by their string tension and the number of times they wind around the imaginary time axis. At the temperature where Bose-Einstein condensation sets in, the string tension, being determined by the chemical potential, vanishes, t...
متن کاملQuantum statistics of hydrogen in strong magnetic fields
By an extension of the Feynman–Kleinert variational approach, we calculate the temperature-dependent effective classical potential governing the quantum statistical properties of a hydrogen atom in a uniform magnetic field. In the zero-temperature limit, we obtain ground state energies which are accurate for all magnetic field strengths from weak to strong fields. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. A...
